Best Time to Visit Northeast India: A Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to visit Northeast India runs October to April for clear skies and open roads. Choose by goal: Tawang snow in December, Kaziranga safaris November to April, Dawki clear water November to January, Sikkim rhododendron 10 to 25 April, Hornbill Festival 1 to 10 December, and Ziro Music Festival 24 to 27 September.

We run trips across all eight Northeast states and Sikkim from our base in Assam. Our guests ask one question more than any other. When should you come? The honest answer depends on what you want to see. A snow window, a river you read the riverbed through, a one-horned rhino at a waterhole, and a peak music festival each sit in different months. This guide breaks the year down so you book the right month for the right trip.

January to March: cold, dry, and the snow question

January and February deliver the driest air of the year across the plains. Guwahati sits at 12°C to 24°C. This is the strongest window for Kaziranga. Grass is low, water sources shrink, and rhinos gather at waterholes where you see them clearly. February holds peak wildlife visibility before the season warms.

Tawang is the hard call. January is the peak snowfall month with temperatures down to -8°C to -10°C. The Sela Tunnel, a 12.04 km all-weather tunnel on NH-13 opened in March 2024, now connects Dirang and Tawang and bypasses the highest exposed section of Sela Pass. It saves roughly an hour over the old pass road. Even so, heavy snowfall in Tawang town and beyond the tunnel exit blocks local roads, and clearance by the Border Roads Organisation takes days. We rate road closure risk as extreme in December to February. For snow with lower risk, wait for the December note below or come in late November.

March brings Chapchar Kut in Mizoram, with the main Aizawl celebration held 9 to 13 March 2026 at Lammual ground and a public holiday on 7 March. Sikkim rhododendron starts at lower elevations. The Dentam Rhododendron Festival in Sikkim falls in late March, though exact 2026 dates remain unconfirmed. Tawang road access begins to improve but still carries high risk.

April and May: spring colour and the last safaris

April is one of the best all-round months in the region. Sikkim rhododendron hits peak viewing 10 to 25 April across Yumthang Valley, Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, and Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, with over 40 species documented. North Sikkim protected areas need a PAP for Indian citizens, arranged through a registered operator, and processing takes 2 to 3 weeks in peak season. Plan early.

Assam celebrates Rongali Bihu from 14 to 20 April 2026. Goru Bihu falls on 14 April and Manuh Bihu, the Assamese New Year, on 15 April. Kaziranga stays open, and Tawang access is reliable in April and May.

May suits Yumthang Valley rhododendron and a pre-monsoon Tawang run before roads turn. Kaziranga closes for the 2025 to 26 season on 29 May 2026, extended four days from the original 25 May date due to demand. Book your final safaris before then.

June to August: monsoon and waterfalls only

The southwest monsoon advances into the Northeast around 9 to 14 June, running 4 to 5 days ahead of normal in 2026. Kaziranga closes from 30 May through September for flooding. Arunachal road travel turns unreliable. As of June 2026, heavy rainfall is already causing landslides on the Akajan-Likabali-Bame Road affecting Upper Siang, West Siang, and Lepa Rada districts.

One region rewards monsoon visitors. Meghalaya. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram sit in an area receiving 11,000 mm of rain a year. July and August put Nohkalikai Falls and Seven Sisters Falls at maximum flow, with temperatures of 20°C to 25°C and thin crowds. The living root bridges at Nongriat stay accessible with proper gear, though trails are hazardous and slippery. We trek Nongriat in the dry season, October to March, for stable footing. If waterfalls are your reason to come, the monsoon is your window. For everything else, wait.

    September: Ziro and the reopening

September turns the corner. The monsoon retreats and Arunachal roads clear from late in the month. The Ziro Music Festival runs 24 to 27 September 2026 in Ziro Valley, Lower Subansiri district, Arunachal Pradesh, across three open-air stages: Danyi, Pwlo, and Takvr. Arunachal needs an Inner Line Permit for all Indian non-residents, applied online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in. Read our Inner Line Permit guide before you travel.

If you want to stay close to the music, the Ziro Backpacker's Yard campsite sits 290 m from the venue. Per person per night rates are Rs 2099 for 2 nights, Rs 1899 for 3 nights, and Rs 1699 for 4 nights. See our Ziro Festival package and the wider Ziro Valley trips. Kaziranga also begins reopening in September. The Bagori range reopened on 26 September in the prior season.

    October to December: peak season

October opens the strongest stretch of the year. Post-monsoon skies clear across every state. Kaziranga's Central Range reopens around the second week. Tawang access is excellent in October and November, the best all-round window. North Sikkim zones including Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang become accessible, with Gurudongmar at around 5,430 m requiring acclimatization. Dawki and the Umngot River start clearing. Book accommodation ahead, as peak season is underway.

November holds the sweet spots. Elephant safaris at Kaziranga resume on 1 November. The Umngot River at Dawki, around 85 km from Shillong, reaches peak clarity from November, and you read the riverbed through the water. The river turned muddy in 2025 from road construction and was reported clear again by late November 2025. Tawang offers its last reliable snow-free access before December risk. The Sangai Festival in Manipur is expected 21 to 30 November 2026, though official confirmation is not yet sighted. Foreign government advisories from the US, UK, and Canada recommend avoiding Manipur due to ethnic tensions. Check current advice before planning Manipur travel.

December is the festival month. The Hornbill Festival runs 1 to 10 December 2026 at Kisama Heritage Village, 12 km south of Kohima, Nagaland, with temperatures of 5°C to 15°C. Tickets sell at the gate with no advance booking, commonly cited at Rs 50 to 150 a day plus a Rs 50 camera charge, though the exact 2026 fee is worth confirming with Nagaland Tourism. Book accommodation early, as rates rise two to five times during festival week. Nagaland needs an ILP for Indian non-residents, applied at ilp.nagaland.gov.in, with no guarantor required.

December is also the snow sweet spot for Tawang. Early December gives you snow without extreme cold and lower road risk. After mid-December, heavy snowfall blocks the Tawang town side even with the Sela Tunnel open, so avoid independent road trips then. Kaziranga runs strong in December, with wildlife concentrated, though safari prices rise from 20 December to 1 January under holiday pricing.
