    About Tawang

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, is a famous, snow-covered hill destination known for the ancient, iconic Tawang Monastery. It offers a rich blend of culture, spirituality, and adventure, with travelers exploring high-altitude lakes, passes, and valleys. It is a top tourist spot in Northeast India, perfect for nature and cultural enthusiasts.

    Tawang travel guide

Tawang sits at around 10,000 ft in western Arunachal Pradesh, near the India-China border. People go for the largest monastery in India, the high Sela Pass at 13,700 ft, Bumla Pass on the border, and Madhuri Lake. Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. We drive this route year-round.

We are The Footprints Tours and Trek, based in Assam. We run the Guwahati to Tawang road regularly, so the times, stops, and warnings below come from how the journey works on the ground.

    Why people go to Tawang

Tawang holds Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, the largest monastery in India and the second-largest in Asia after Potala Palace in Lhasa. The road in crosses Sela Pass, one of the highest motorable points you reach on a standard tour in the Northeast. Above the town, Bumla Pass runs along the India-China frontier at 15,200 ft. Madhuri Lake, Jaswant Garh War Memorial, and the 1962 war history give most guests a full week of reasons to stay.

Permits: ILP for Indians, PAP for foreigners

    Inner Line Permit (Indian citizens)

    • Apply online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in or arunachalilp.com. Pay by UPI, debit card, or net banking.
    • Validity: up to 14 days from your date of entry. Maximum stay in the state is 30 days.

    • Processing: as fast as one hour online, up to 24 to 72 hours on working days. Apply a week ahead to stay safe.

We handle ILP applications for our guests as part of the package. For the full breakdown, read our Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit guide.

Foreign passport holders do not get an ILP. You need a Protected Area Permit instead.

The Guwahati to Tawang road route

The full run is about 480 to 500 km and takes 14 to 16 hours of driving spread over 2 to 3 days. Do not attempt it in one go. The altitude gain alone makes a staged approach the right call.

Route: Guwahati to Tezpur to Bhalukpong (Arunachal border and ILP check) to Bomdila to Dirang to Sela Pass or Sela Tunnel to Tawang.

    Segment breakdown

    SegmentDistanceDrive timeTerrain
Guwahati to Tezpur~181 km~4 hrsFlat Assam plains, NH-27
Tezpur to Bhalukpong~60 km~2 hrsBorder entry, ILP check
Bhalukpong to Dirang~140 km~5 hrsMountain roads begin
Dirang to Tawang~135 km~5 to 6 hrsVia Sela Pass or Tunnel

    Where to stop overnight

For the 3-day approach we recommend:

    • Night 1: Tezpur or Bhalukpong.
    • Night 2: Dirang (around 4,910 ft). We prefer Dirang over Bomdila (around 8,500 ft) because the gentler altitude gain helps your body adjust before the climb to Tawang.
    • Day 3: arrive Tawang.

Start the Dirang to Tawang leg early. Cross Sela before noon. Afternoon cloud, fog, and weather come in fast over the pass, and visibility drops.

Sela Pass and the Sela Tunnel

Sela Pass sits at 4,170 m (13,700 ft) on NH-13 between Dirang and Tawang. For decades, snow closed it from December to February and cut Tawang off.

The Sela Tunnel ended all-weather access problems. PM Modi inaugurated it on 9 March 2024, and it runs fully as of 2026. The system has two tubes of 475 m and 1,790 m linked by a 1,200 m road, total project length around 11.3 km. It sits near 3,000 m (9,800 ft), roughly 400 m below the pass, bypassing the snow-blocked saddle and giving year-round access. The tunnel cuts about an hour and 10 km off the Tezpur to Tawang leg.

The old road over the 4,170 m pass still exists. In clear weather we use it for the views of Sela Lake and the high saddle. The tunnel stays the reliable choice. In December 2025 the BRO opened a second route from Sela Lake via Chabrela, Begajang Gompa, Dungjing, and Jang as a backup on NH-13.

Why a 4x4 matters on the Sela leg

From Bhalukpong onward the road turns into narrow, steep, single-lane mountain track with sharp hairpins. The approach to Sela climbs hard over broken tarmac with loose gravel. The pass itself stands at 13,700 ft.

    • November to February: black ice, snow patches, and mud demand tyre chains. A hatchback or sedan carries real risk here.
    • Monsoon: ruts and post-landslide debris need ground clearance.
    • The Bumla road above Tawang is a rough military track at 15,200 ft where only local SUVs are allowed.

Our 4x4 premium vehicle handles all of this. Compare the fleet and rates on our car rental page. A 4x4 runs Rs 4,500 per day. Split three ways across 7 days, the vehicle cost works out to around Rs 10,500 per person.

    Tawang Monastery

Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, which means "the divine paradise of complete victory," was founded in 1680 to 1681 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, following the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama. It belongs to the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism.

    • Altitude: around 10,000 ft.
    • Structure: a 3-story main building, 65 residential blocks, and a compound wall 282 m long.
    • Resident monks: 450 to 500.
    • Entry: free. The museum inside costs around Rs 20.
    • Hours: 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily. Confirm locally, since hours shift by season.

    Madhuri Lake (Shungetser)

Madhuri Lake, also called Shungetser or Sangetsar, lies about 35 to 42 km northeast of Tawang town. The drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way on mountain road. The lake took its popular name after the 1997 Bollywood film "Koyla" filmed a song there with Madhuri Dixit.

    • Entry: free.
    • Best season: May to November, when roads are clearer.
    • The lake sits close to the China border. A separate border-area permit applies in some cases. We confirm requirements with local authorities before each trip.

    Bumla Pass (Bum La)

Bumla Pass runs at 15,200 ft (4,633 m) on the India-China border. Visiting it needs a permit beyond your ILP.

    • The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Tawang, issues the permit, and the Indian Army Cantonment in Tawang stamps it.
    • We or your Tawang hotel arrange it the day before. Vehicle details go on the permit.
    • Only local SUVs pass the Army checkpost. Outside vehicles are turned back.
    • Hours: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
    • Open season: roughly June to October. Closed November to May for snow.
    • Drive time: 2 to 3 hours one way from Tawang town.

Rest a full day in Tawang before attempting Bumla. The jump to 15,200 ft is steep, and the day of adjustment lowers your risk of altitude sickness.

    Jaswant Garh War Memorial

The memorial honours Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles, who fought in the 1962 Indo-China War. It stands about 21 km from Sela Pass on the Tawang side, at around 10,000 ft, and holds his original bunker, photographs, and artifacts. Entry is free.

The separate Tawang War Memorial in town opens 7:45 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry at 5:30 PM.

    Altitude and acclimatization

Tawang sits at 10,000 ft, Sela at 13,700 ft, Bumla at 15,200 ft. Altitude sickness is a real risk. Watch for headache, nausea, fatigue, and trouble sleeping.

    • Halt overnight at Dirang (around 4,910 ft) before climbing to Tawang.
    • Spend your first full day in Tawang resting before any Bumla or Sela excursion.
    • Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day. Skip alcohol for the first 48 hours. Avoid hard exertion on arrival day.
    • Carry Diamox (acetazolamide), but talk to your doctor first.
    • Anyone with cardiac or pulmonary conditions needs medical clearance before the trip.

    What to pack

    • Summer and shoulder season: light woolens, fleece, waterproof jacket.
    • Winter: heavy woolens, a down jacket, monkey cap, thermal layers, neck gaiter.
    • All seasons: UV sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, moisturiser, waterproof trekking boots.
    • Medical: Diamox (with doctor's advice), ORS sachets, first aid, your prescriptions.
    • Cash: carry enough rupees. ATMs in Tawang are few and often out of service, and most places do not take cards.

How many days and what it costs

Plan a minimum of 5 days and 4 nights from Guwahati. For acclimatization days and a full Bumla trip, 7 to 9 days works better.

    • Our Tawang package starts at Rs 14,999 per person for 5 days and 4 nights.
    • Independent travel over 7 days from a Guwahati base runs Rs 15,000 to 25,000 per person, depending on rooms and how you share the vehicle.
    • A helicopter runs Guwahati to Tawang five days a week, excluding Wednesday and Sunday. Check availability a day ahead. It saves road time but removes the gradual altitude gain keeping you well.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to visit Tawang?

Yes. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit, checked at Bhalukpong on entry. The 2026 fee is Rs 300 for up to 3 days and Rs 500 for 4 to 14 days per person. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit at USD 30 per person, applied for through a registered operator at least 4 weeks ahead.

Is the road to Tawang open in winter now?

Yes. The Sela Tunnel, open since March 2024 and running through 2026, bypasses the snow-blocked Sela Pass and gives year-round access. Individual sections still get black ice and landslides, so we check BRO advisories before winter departures.

How many days do I need for Tawang?

Five days and four nights is the minimum from Guwahati. We recommend 7 to 9 days so you get acclimatization days and a full Bumla Pass excursion without rushing the altitude.

    When is Bumla Pass open?

Roughly June to October, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, closed Saturday and Sunday. It shuts November to May for snow. You need an Army-stamped permit arranged the day before, and only local SUVs reach the pass.

Why do I need a 4x4 for this trip?

From Bhalukpong the roads turn into steep, single-lane mountain track with hairpins, loose gravel, and the 13,700 ft Sela climb. Winter adds black ice and snow. A 4x4 gives the clearance and grip a hatchback or sedan lacks.

What is the best month to visit Tawang?

April to May for rhododendrons and mild weather, or October to November for the clearest skies and views. Avoid July and August, when heavy rain raises landslide risk.
