About Ziro Valley
A picturesque valley known for its rice cultivation and the unique Apatani tribe culture.
Ziro Valley at a glance
Ziro Valley sits at around 1,688 m in Lower Subansiri, Arunachal Pradesh. You need an Inner Line Permit to enter, and March to October is the best window. The valley holds Apatani villages, wet-rice paddies, and pine ridges. Plan 3 days for a proper visit.
We run trips into Ziro through the year, and we drive the road from Naharlagun ourselves. This guide covers permits, culture, the terrain and viewpoints, the Talley Valley trek, timing, and how to reach the valley, with the Ziro Music Festival flagged as one reason to come.
The Inner Line Permit you need
Every Indian citizen who is not a resident of Arunachal Pradesh needs an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter the state. Ziro is no exception.
- Apply online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in.
- The official portal lists a fee of Rs 100 per person. Some travel sites quote Rs 300 for up to 3 days and Rs 500 for 4 to 14 days. Use the official rate, but confirm at eilp.arunachal.gov.in before you book, because fees change.
- List Ziro Valley or Lower Subansiri explicitly in your application.
- Processing takes 24 to 48 hours. Maximum tourist validity is 14 days.
- Apply with a government photo ID: Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence.
- Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) in addition to the ILP.
- For support, email nodal.eilp@gmail.com, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
For a full walkthrough, read our Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit guide. We handle the ILP for our guests as part of every Ziro booking.
The Apatani tribe and UNESCO status
The valley is home to the Apatani people. In 2014, UNESCO added the Apatani Cultural Landscape to its World Heritage Tentative List. It is not yet inscribed as a full World Heritage Site, so it stays on the tentative list. The nomination recognises a land use system tying cultural practice to careful management of natural resources.
Wet-rice and fish polyculture
The defining Apatani practice is around 2,000 years old. Farmers grow rice and rear fish in the same flooded paddy plots at the same time.
- Bamboo water channels step spring water from one plot down to the next.
- Fish fingerlings swim among the rice, eat pests, and fertilise the mud.
- No draft animals or machines touch the soil. The whole system runs by hand.
- Yields stay reliable while the land stays in balance.
When you walk the paddies between June and August, you see this system at full work.
Apatani villages: Hong, Hari, and Hija
Hong is the largest Apatani village. Hari, Hija (also spelled Hijja), Bulla, Dutta, and Mudang Tage are the other main settlements. Hong and Hari attract the most visitors for cultural walks.
- Traditional houses stand elevated on stilts, built from pine and bamboo, with a central fireplace.
- The Bulyañ is the traditional village council. It governs through moral reasoning.
- Older women in the villages sometimes carry facial tattoos and nose plugs called yaping hullo. The practice has largely stopped among younger generations.
Apatani festivals through the year
Two festivals open the culture to visitors between March and July.
- Myoko Festival falls in mid-to-late March. One operator confirms 21 to 22 March 2026. It is the most important Apatani festival, built around prayer, purification, and communal celebration.
- Dree Festival happens in July, with the exact date varying year to year. It is an agricultural prayer festival for good harvests.
Terrain and viewpoints
The valley floor is a fertile alluvial plain ringed by pine-covered hills. Hapoli is the main town and district headquarters.
- Kile Pakho Ridge overlooks the green valley on one side and Himalayan snow peaks on the other. An easy family hike reaches it.
- Pine Grove (Myolyang) is a pine forest 3 km from Old Ziro. It suits birdwatching, walks, and picnics.
- Paddy fields turn most intensely green from June through August during active growing. Golden harvest colours appear in October.
Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary
Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary covers 337 sq km and sits about 30 to 37 km from Hapoli. Elevation runs from 1,200 m to 3,000 m.
- Vehicles reach 18 km in. Beyond Pange village the road ends, and you go on foot.
- Get a forest department trekking permit in Ziro town before you enter. A nominal entry fee applies. Verify the amount locally, because sources differ.
- Wildlife includes clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, Malayan giant squirrel, Indian muntjac, and over 130 bird species including the black eagle.
- Flora includes silver fir, bamboo, and pine.
- Best trekking season is October to April. Monsoon trails from June to September turn slippery and challenging. The sanctuary stays open year-round.
Your ILP for Arunachal covers entry to the sanctuary. See our trekking expeditions for guided options.
Best time to visit
March to October is the recommended window. Each season offers something different.
| Season | Months | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March to April | Myoko festival, planting season, 6 to 20°C, good trekking and culture |
| Summer | May to June | Lush green, warm weather |
| Monsoon | July to September | Peak green paddies, Dree Festival in July, Ziro Music Festival in late September, slippery roads and landslide risk |
| Post-monsoon | October | Harvest, clear skies, golden paddies, best photography |
| Winter | November to February | Cold near 0°C, scenic but fewer homestays and reduced transport |
Green paddies peak from June. For photography, October brings the golden harvest and clear skies.
