Tawang vs Mechuka: Which Arunachal Destination Fits Your Trip
By Ankur A. Duarah, Founder & CEO, The Footprints Tours and TrekTawang sits at 3,048 m, around 480 to 500 km from Guwahati, and suits a 5 to 8 day trip with paved roads and the new Sela Tunnel. Mechuka sits at 1,890 m, 750 to 800 km out, needs 10 to 12 days and a 4x4. Pick Tawang for a first visit, Mechuka for deep offbeat travel.
We run both routes. Guests email us asking which one to book, and the honest answer depends on how many days you have, how your body handles altitude, and what kind of trip you want. Below is the comparison we give every caller, with real numbers, not sales talk.

Getting there: the road decides a lot
Tawang
Tawang is the shorter, easier drive. You cover 480 to 500 km from Guwahati over two driving days on NH-13.
- Day 1: Guwahati to Dirang or Bomdila, 350 to 380 km, 7 to 9 hours.
- Day 2: Dirang or Bomdila to Tawang via the Sela section, 110 to 130 km, 5 to 7 hours.
We recommend the Dirang halt. It sits lower, eases your body into altitude, and has hot springs.
The single biggest change to this route in a generation is the Sela Tunnel. PM Modi inaugurated it on 9 March 2024, and it runs fully in 2026. BRO built it under Project Vartak at 3,000 m, 400 m below Sela Pass. It holds the title of world's longest bi-lane tunnel at 13,000 ft. It cuts around 10 km off the distance and about an hour off the drive. More important, it stays open when Sela Pass takes heavy snow, and it bypasses the Nechiphu fog zone.
What the tunnel does not fix is monsoon. Landslides on other NH-13 stretches still add 4 to 6 hours in July and August. The road surface works for a sedan or compact SUV after the tunnel. For November to February we put guests in the 4x4 Premium (Rs 4,500 per day) because of black ice. Cross the Sela section before noon in winter and keep a 1 to 2 hour buffer.
Mechuka
Mechuka is the longer, harder drive. From Guwahati you face 750 to 800 km, 24 to 30 hours, over two to three driving days. The route runs Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Pasighat, Aalo (Along), then Mechuka. Starting from Dibrugarh airport shortens the run.
- Pasighat to Aalo: around 100 km.
- Aalo to Mechuka: around 180 km, 8 to 10 hours.
The Aalo to Mechuka leg is the test. The road is narrow and winding, with rough unpaved sections, sharp curves, and slippery mud patches. A small car does not belong here. We send guests in a Compact SUV (Rs 3,000 per day) or the 4x4 Premium (Rs 4,500 per day). A hatchback or sedan is not suitable. BRO is upgrading the road toward all-season use, but the work is not complete in 2026.
A UDAN helicopter has run twice weekly to Mechuka on reported Saturday and Monday slots. The schedule shifts often, so we never promise a seat without confirming the day with the state aviation desk first.

Altitude, season, and your body
Tawang sits at 3,048 m. The route crosses high ground near Sela. Altitude sickness is a moderate to high risk, and we pace the climb with the Dirang halt for a reason.
Mechuka sits at 1,890 m. You still get Buddhist monastery culture, tribal life, and Himalayan scenery, with far lower altitude risk. For guests who worry about altitude, this is the deciding factor.
Seasons differ too.
- Tawang: peak is March to June, mild 10 to 25 C, lush, busy, book early. Shoulder is September to October, 5 to 20 C, fewer people. Winter December to February brings snow, and the tunnel keeps the road open. Avoid July and August.
- Mechuka: best is October to November, clear post-monsoon skies, 10 to 20 C, good roads. December to March stays clear and cold with light snow chances. Avoid June to September, when landslides make the Aalo to Mechuka road dangerous or impassable.
Permits for both
Both destinations need an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals, applied on the same portal at arunachalilp.com. Same fees apply: Rs 300 for up to 3 days, Rs 500 for 4 to 14 days, valid up to 14 days. Apply 4 to 5 days ahead, since processing takes 1 to 3 working days.
The difference is which districts you select.
- Tawang: select West Kameng and Tawang.
- Mechuka: select Shi-Yomi. Older guides say West Siang, but the district changed in December 2018. Use Shi-Yomi or risk being turned back at a checkpost.
Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit through a registered operator like us. We arrange this.
Two extra notes:
- Bum La Pass (4,700 m) from Tawang needs a separate restricted-area permit and army permission. Indian nationals only. Foreigners visit Tawang Monastery, Madhuri Lake, and the Sela section, but not Bum La.
- Lamang Border Area near Mechuka needs an extra permit beyond the ILP. We arrange it in advance.
Full detail sits in our Arunachal Inner Line Permit guide.
What you see at each
Tawang
- Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgyal Lhatse), 400 years old, largest in India, second largest in Asia. No entry fee, museum around Rs 20.
- Madhuri Lake (Shungatser), a glacial lake under snow peaks.
- Sela Pass at 4,170 m, with the tunnel as the all-weather option.
- Nuranang (Jang) Waterfall and the Tawang War Memorial from the 1962 war.
- Bum La Pass for Indian nationals, vehicle hire Rs 5,500 to 6,000 for 4 to 6 people, permit Rs 200 per person plus a Rs 100 surcharge added in 2025.
Festivals: Torgya runs tentatively 28 to 30 January 2026 at the monastery, and Losar (Monpa New Year) falls in late February or early March. Both follow the lunar calendar, so confirm dates with the district administration before you lock travel.
Mechuka
- Samten Yongcha Monastery, around 400 years old, on a hilltop with valley views.
- Gurudwara Nanak Taposthan, tied to Guru Nanak Dev Ji's 16th-century visit.
- Neh Pemashubu meditation site, 13 km from town.
- Sikodido Waterfall, the Siyom River with boat rides, and Dorjeeling Village for Memba culture.
Crowds are sparse. No high-rise hotels, no tourist market, minimal infrastructure. Stays are mostly homestays with Memba families at Rs 800 to 2,000 per night. The Mechuka Adventure Festival has run around 23 to 25 November in past years, but the 2026 dates are not announced, so check with the Shi-Yomi administration.

Frequently asked questions
Is Tawang or Mechuka easier to reach?
Tawang. The town sits 480 to 500 km from Guwahati over two driving days on mostly paved NH-13, with the Sela Tunnel keeping the road open. Mechuka is 750 to 800 km and needs a 4x4 on the rough Aalo leg.
Which one is safer for altitude sickness?
Mechuka at 1,890 m carries low altitude risk. Tawang at 3,048 m is moderate to high, so we add the Dirang halt to let your body adjust.
Do I need a permit for both?
Yes. Indian nationals need an ILP on arunachalilp.com, Rs 300 up to 3 days or Rs 500 up to 14 days. Select West Kameng and Tawang for Tawang, and Shi-Yomi for Mechuka. Foreigners need a PAP through a registered operator.
When should I avoid each destination?
Avoid Tawang in July and August, when monsoon landslides hit NH-13. Avoid Mechuka from June to September, when the Aalo to Mechuka road turns dangerous or impassable.
Do foreigners visit Bum La Pass from Tawang?
No. Bum La is open to Indian nationals only. Foreign guests still see Tawang Monastery, Madhuri Lake, and the Sela section.
How many days do I need for each?
Tawang works in 5 to 8 days. Mechuka needs 10 to 12 days once you count two to three driving days each way.
