    Meghalaya 7-Day Itinerary 2026: Day-by-Day Plan

This 7-day Meghalaya plan starts and ends at Guwahati. You cover Shillong, Cherrapunji, the Nongriat double-decker root bridge, Mawlynnong, Dawki, and Krang Suri Falls. Below you get drive times, where to stay, rough per-person cost, what to book ahead, and the new 2026 rules to plan around.

We run this circuit often, so the schedule reflects real road time and the way checkposts, fees, and village rules work on the ground. Meghalaya and Assam require no permit for Indian or foreign nationals. Carry a government photo ID, because checkposts near the Bangladesh border verify them.

    When to go in 2026

Travel October to April. Skies stay clear and temperatures sit pleasant, around 15 to 25°C in Shillong and 18 to 28°C near Dawki. October and November bring lush post-monsoon green and the most reliable root-bridge access. March to early June works well before the heavy rain arrives.

Avoid June to September for this itinerary. Monsoon makes NH6 prone to landslides, the Nongriat trek turns unsafe, Krang Suri bans swimming, and the Dawki river runs muddy. For the clearest Dawki water, target November to February.

One rule to plan around first

As of early 2026, Mawlynnong bans single-day visitors on Sundays. The village Dorbar council reserves Sunday for church and family time, and shops, stalls, and services stay shut. Only overnight guests with a confirmed booking remain. This itinerary places Mawlynnong on Day 5, so pick a start date to keep Day 5 off a Sunday. Two other sites close Sundays too: Don Bosco Museum and Mawsmai Cave.

Withdraw cash in Shillong or Cherrapunji. There is no ATM in Mawlynnong, Nongriat, or the Dawki area, and digital payments are unreliable for Dawki boating.

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong via Umiam Lake

Drive Guwahati (LGBI Airport) to Shillong, about 100 km on NH6, 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Traffic, rain, and weekend rush add time. Plan 4 to 5 hours total with the Umiam stop.

Stop at Umiam Lake (Barapani), on NH6 about 15 km north of Shillong. Boating runs 9 AM to 5 PM. Rates: pedal boat Rs 20, cruise boat Rs 10, water scooter Rs 50, yachting Rs 100, water skiing Rs 200.

    • Stay: Shillong. Budget guesthouses from Rs 1,500 to 2,000. Mid-range 3-star around Rs 2,000 to 3,500. Hotel Polo Towers from about Rs 3,200. Ri Kynjai from about Rs 11,500.
    • Book ahead: Shillong hotels 1 to 2 weeks out in peak season. The full 7-day cab 1 to 2 weeks out.
    • Transport: airport to Shillong private cab Rs 3,000 to 4,500, or a shared sumo seat Rs 500 to 700.

    Day 2: Shillong sights

Spend the day in and around Shillong. Cover Ward's Lake, Elephant Falls, and the Don Bosco Museum.

    • Ward's Lake: Rs 20 adults, Rs 10 children. Open 8:30 AM to 7 PM in summer, to 5:30 PM in winter. Some sources note a Tuesday closure. Confirm on-site, as the 2026 status is unclear.
    • Elephant Falls: Rs 20 per person.
    • Don Bosco Museum: Rs 100 Indians, Rs 200 foreigners, Rs 50 Indian students. Open 9 AM to 5:30 PM. Closed Sundays.

Stay a second night in Shillong. Eat at a local restaurant for around Rs 200 to 300 per person.

Day 3: Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Nohkalikai

Drive Shillong to Cherrapunji, 54 km on SH5, 1.5 to 2 hours with stops. Base here for two nights so you start the Nongriat trek early.

    • Nohkalikai Falls: Rs 20 per person, Rs 20 camera. Open 9 AM to 5 PM. Some sources cite Rs 50. Confirm at the gate.
    • Mawsmai Cave: Rs 20 adults, Rs 10 children, Rs 20 camera. Open 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Closed Sundays. A few sources cite Rs 40, so check on arrival.
    • Eco Park Sohra: Rs 20 per person, Rs 30 parking. Open 9 AM to 5 or 6 PM. Free entry 6 to 9 AM.
    • Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang): no entry fee, viewpoint only.

Stay: Cherrapunji homestays average Rs 1,900 to 2,500, with a range of Rs 800 to 4,000. Goshen Homestay, Pamilya Homestay, and Lavender Guesthouse are popular. Book 1 to 2 weeks ahead in peak season.

Day 4: Nongriat double-decker root bridge trek

Drive Cherrapunji to Tyrna village, 12 to 15 km, about 20 to 30 minutes. From Tyrna, the walk to Nongriat is about 3 km, roughly 3,000 steps down and 3,000 back up. Round trip runs 4 to 6 hours for day-trippers. Start by 7 to 8 AM.

Add about an hour to reach Rainbow Falls, around 30 minutes past the double-decker bridge. The trail is moderate and slippery when wet. Carry water, snacks, and shoes with grip.

    • Fee: Rs 30 to 50 per person at Tyrna. Reports vary, with some citing Rs 10 entry plus Rs 20 camera. No advance booking and no mandatory guide. Local guides wait at Tyrna if you want one.
    • Stay overnight at Nongriat or return to Cherrapunji. Serene Homestay charges Rs 500 per person for a room and Rs 400 per person for a dorm. There is no online booking and beds are scarce, so call ahead.

    Day 5: Mawlynnong and Dawki

Drive Cherrapunji to Mawlynnong, about 81 km, 2 hours 15 minutes to 2.5 hours. Keep this off a Sunday, as covered above.

    • Mawlynnong: Rs 100 per person plus parking. Bamboo Sky Walk Rs 30. Riwai Living Root Bridge Rs 30. Balancing Rock Rs 10 to 20. No ATM, so bring cash. If your dates fall on a weekend, book an overnight stay. The village turns away Sunday day-trippers.

Then drive Mawlynnong to Dawki, about 27 km, 28 to 45 minutes.

    • Dawki boating: Rs 500 to 800 per boat for about 4 people. No formal entry fee. Boating runs roughly 8 AM to 5 PM. Carry cash.

Stay overnight near Dawki or drive back toward Shillong. Dawki to Shillong is about 82 km, 2.5 to 3.5 hours, so allow 3 hours with stops.

Day 6: Krang Suri and Jowai

Head to Krang Suri Falls in the Jaintia Hills. It sits 31 km from Dawki and 29 km from Jowai, about 30 minutes from Jowai.

    • Krang Suri Falls: Rs 40 per person. Life jacket Rs 100, mandatory to swim. Open 7 AM to 6 PM. Swimming opens October to February. Avoid June to September due to strong currents. A boat ride costs about Rs 100, though the fee is unconfirmed with an official source.

Stay: Jowai. Budget from about Rs 1,700. V Resorts Highwinds Lakeside is a popular mid-range lakeside option. Upscale supply is limited, so book ahead.

    Day 7: Jowai to Guwahati

Drive Jowai to Guwahati, about 158 to 161 km on NH6, 4 to 4.5 hours. Allow 4.5 to 5 hours and add a buffer for NH6 landslide risk if you travel near the monsoon edge. Time your departure to your flight or train out of Guwahati.

    FAQ

Do I need a permit for Meghalaya in 2026?

No. Meghalaya and Assam require no permit for Indian or foreign nationals. Carry a government photo ID, since border checkposts near Bangladesh verify them. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram do require an Inner Line Permit. See our Arunachal ILP guide.

    Is Mawlynnong open on Sundays?

No, not for day-trippers. From early 2026, the village bans single-day visitors on Sundays and shuts shops and services. Only overnight guests with a confirmed booking stay. Plan Day 5 of this itinerary off a Sunday.

How hard is the Nongriat root bridge trek?

Moderate. You descend about 3,000 steps and climb about 3,000 back, around 3 km each way from Tyrna. A round trip runs 4 to 6 hours. The path turns slippery in rain, so start by 7 to 8 AM and wear shoes with grip.

When is the Dawki river water clearest?

November to February. The water runs clear and the boat ride shows the riverbed. During monsoon, June to September, the river runs muddy and the trip loses its appeal.

How much cash should I carry?

Enough for fees, boating, and meals across the Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong, Nongriat, and Dawki stretch. There is no ATM in those areas and digital payment is unreliable for Dawki boats. Withdraw in Shillong or Cherrapunji.
